Eveline by James Joyce(1914)

 rating: 8.5/10

I like 'Eveline' because it is not hard to understand compared to previous stories. "Should Eveline run away from her current life?". If she follows Frank, her sisters will be left abused by her father, but she can start her new life. However, will she be happy? Does Frank truly love her? Nobody knows. Indeed, the 'dust' and 'sea' increase uncertainty about her life with Frank. Therefore, there is no right way to choose, and Eveline is in 'paralysis.'

If I were Eveline, I would choose to leave. There is no doubt that she went through tough life with no respect. However, she is accustomed to this bad environment, even her father's violence. It makes her confused and hopeful. Though her life with Frank may be uncertain, she should try to be free from the obsession that limits her life.

As I researched some documents in JSTOR, the situation of Ireland engulfed by Empire is revealed in the story with the isolation of Eveline. Also, the 'paralysis' of Eveline depicted nationalism toward Ireland. The Irish had made their habit of going against England, and as a result, they refused to change their condition.
