The Sisters by James Joyce(1914)
rating: 7/10
What is so unique about this story is that James Joyce didn't end his sentences. Not giving a clear message might be appropriate considering the feature of the topic. The story is strongly related to religion. Indeed, Catholicism is a religion that had a strong influence on politics, and people couldn't doubt the fate of Catholics for a long time. No one asks themselves whether it is right, and James Joyce was against religion, so he might intend to plant the seed of doubt in the public mind.
I was irritated because I couldn't combine scattered clues into the conclusion. I still can't even guess about Father Flynn and his odd behaviors. The people around his coffin were soulful, nervous, or respectful. However, the story they told was kind of weird. Also, the narrator, who was in a close relationship with Father Flynn, felt freed. The word 'freedom' contrasts with 'paralysis.' The death of Father Flynn changed the narrator's mind significantly. Thus, I can guess there was something that happened between them. Still, I don't know why. The only thing I can sure about the story is the death of Father Flynn made it dark and mysterious.
